The cheeky childhood antics of Princess Charlotte have been compared to those of her uncle, Prince Harry, in a light-hearted viral video that has been viewed over a million times on social media platform TikTok.
Footage of the princess playfully sticking out her tongue during a royal sports event in 2019 has been edited together with earlier footage of Harry performing the same childlike act directed towards the paparazzi in the 1980s, before he was swiftly redirected by Princess Diana.
The video, uploaded to TikTok by user royal_fam_fan, has been viewed in excess of one million times and received over 145,000 likes on the platform so far.
Commenters were quick to praise the royals and their endearing similarities.
“Like uncle like niece 😭” wrote one user, with another adding: “all the royal kids are such icons😭.”
A further commenter pointed out the similarities between the pair in relation to their position in the royal family. “It’s always the spares 🥰😂😂,” they observed.
In terms of the royal family, “spare” is a term often used to used in relation to the siblings of a future monarch and forms part of the longer saying “heir and a spare.”
When he was born, Harry was third in line to the British throne behind his father and older brother Prince William. Today he is fifth in the line of succession. Princess Charlotte is third in line, behind her father (William) and older brother, Prince George.
The footage of the young princess playfully sticking her tongue out at an unseen figure was captured in August 2019 at the inaugural King’s Cup Regatta, a sailing race patronized by her parents William and Kate Middleton, who, since the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September, are now the Prince and Princess of Wales.
The moment came when Kate encouraged her children George and Charlotte to wave down to a crowd of people from a window of a building overlooking Cowes Marina. While George carried on down a flight of stairs, Charlotte took aim.
British magazine Hello! later reported that Kate was gesturing for George and Charlotte to spot their grandparents, Carole and Michael Middleton, in the crowd and that Charlotte stuck her tongue out when she spotted her grandfather.
Kate was filmed laughingly reacting to her daughter’s, gesture which was widely shared online at the time.
Prince Harry was well-known for his cheeky antics while out and about in public at a young age, often trailed by Princess Diana—who was often quick to correct any naughtiness.
An image included at the end of the viral video shows Harry in the arms of his mother during the Trooping the Color royal family balcony appearance at Buckingham Palace in 1988. The prince playfully stuck his tongue out at the thousands of people lining The Mall to see the queen and to watch the Royal Air Force flypast while his cousin, Lady Davina Windsor, laughed along.
Harry’s memoir will be released on January 10, 2023.
