A video of President Joe Biden learning that the U.S. soccer team beat Iran in the 2022 World Cup has been viewed more than 350,000 times, in a match that saw America triumph over its long-time political foe.
The USMNT beat Iran 1-0 on Tuesday evening to qualify second in the group and progress to the last 16 of the World Cup in Qatar. Attacking midfielder Christian Pulisic scored for the U.S.A. 38 minutes into the game to clinch the victory.
On Saturday, the U.S. will play the Netherlands in a battle to reach the quarter-final.
In the video of Biden, posted on his official Twitter account on Tuesday after the game ended, Bruce Reed, his Deputy Chief of Staff, is seen speaking to a colleague behind Biden while the president is posing for a selfie with a young boy.
Reed then told Biden “U.S.A. won the Iran game” before the president walked up to a podium at the Democratic event he’s at.
“Hello, hello, hello. The United States beat Iran, 1- 0. U.S. 1 – Iran 0, game’s over,” Biden says. “Hey, hey, hey!” he added.
Elation and cheering from the crowd ensued before they started chanting “USA, USA!”
Biden replies: “You got it, USA, USA! That’s a big game, man. When I spoke to the coach and the players I said ‘you can do this.’ They went ‘ahh yeah…’ They did it. God love ’em. Anyway, just thought you might wanna hear.”
Tweeting the video, Biden said: “Big wins mean big announcements. Way to go, @USMNT.”
As of Wednesday morning, the video had been viewed more than 365,000 times.
Meanwhile, England beat Wales 3-0 to top the group. They will play Senegal in the last 16.
The U.S.A.-Iran match was overshadowed by decades of political tension between the two countries, which severed diplomatic ties more than four decades ago. Despite reaching an international nuclear agreement with Iran under former President Barrack Obama, tensions between the two rivals worsened since 2018 when former President Donald Trump withdrew from the accord.
It also comes as protests across the Islamic Republic continue following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who died in police custody on September 16. Amini died under suspicious circumstances three days after her arrest for allegedly breaching Iran‘s dress code for women. Police claimed she died of a heart attack, however eyewitnesses, including several women who were detained with Amini, said she was severely beaten by the police. Since her death, anti-government protests have rocked Iran, and show no sign of abating.
Tehran deployed state security forces to crack down on the protesters, leading to violent clashes spreading across the Middle Eastern country.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guards claimed more than 300 people have died in the protests, but experts and rights groups believe this number is higher.
