Taylor Swift Fans Share Their Wildest Theories About Upcoming Album

Taylor Swift dropped a bombshell Sunday night when she announced her upcoming 10th album, Midnights, at the MTV VMAs.

After winning the Video of the Year for her self-directed “All Too Well” clip, Swift let us know about the new album at the end of her acceptance speech, practically asking her fans, “…ready for it?”

On Twitter, Swift wrote: “Midnights, the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life, will be out October 21. Meet me at midnight.”

Fans have begun to speculate on the wildest Easter eggs that Swift may have left for them that led to Midnights—including that she may have hinted at the aesthetic of the album by wearing a blue dress to the VMAs afterparty.

Leaving clues is a trait that she seems prone to do in all of her projects. After all, Swift famously told Jimmy Fallon in November: “How far is too far in advance? Can I hint at something three years in advance? Can I even plan things out that far?”

And even that comment has been used as evidence of a bigger theory, which is that this album is suspected by many to be the sister album of her album, Lover, which came out in 2019.

One fan explained it in a TikTok that was also shared on Twitter. The user, @idontlikejohnmayer1331, wrote: “thinking about how swifties totally forgot about that random theory that Lover had a Side B which was going to be ‘blue,’ and how Taylor said she plans things three years in advance sometimes, and how she ends daylight with ‘…the things that haunt me in the middle of the night…’, and now we get Midnights .. which is literally an album about things that haunt her in the middle of the night 3 years after Lover (which was originally going to be named Daylight) came out.”

While Midnights’ connection to Lover seems to be the theory that fans are trying their hardest to figure out, others are speculating on the potential track names that Swift has yet to reveal.

One user on TikTok known as @theThriftySwiftie made a video pointing out the lines from the album announcement that Swift posted on her social media and guessing that some of the track names were in the post.

Others think that the song titles could be the dates of the “13 sleepless nights” that Swift mentioned. One user on Twitter remarked: “this is legitimately the most chaotic thing she could possibly do.”

Others are eagerly awaiting the new record’s first single. Twitter user @eliseryann wrote: “My own PERSONAL theory is that we are getting a lead single… soon. Lot of swifties have been clowned about lead single days so take this with a grain of salt but I’m calling a single on the anniversary of The Incident*👀.”

The incident in question occurred at the VMAs show on September 13, 2009, when Kanye West interrupted Swift’s acceptance speech as she won the Best Female Video award.

Some are also theorizing about collaborators on the upcoming album. While Swift is known to work with some equally talented singers and songwriters (among them Ed Sheeran, Bon Iver and Gary Lightbody), some fans are wondering if there will be any collaboration on this project given the intimacy that Swift has shared about it.

A Twitter user speculated: “Jessiesvillain’s theory: I don’t think Taylor’s album ‘Midnights’ will have any featured artists because Taylor says that ‘this is a collection of music written in the middle of the night’ therefore it’s gonna be personal and so she might want to sing all the lyrics herself.”

No matter which theories come to fruition on October 21, the fans are assured that the album will be emotional, vulnerable and magical, and we can’t help but agree.
